How Intervention Works

An intervention is never easy. No one likes to be confrontational with other people. This becomes even more difficult when that relationship is a work-based relationship.

The signs of a coworker’s addiction are probably clearer to you than your coworker believes. It is uncomfortable bursting someone’s opinion that they “have it all under control”. Every person has value as a human being. If you need even more motivation though, think of that person’s value to your company. A concerned individual rather than a professional intervention leader often handle family interventions. In the case of an executive intervention, a professional should be advised if not present. They can better advise company officials of any legal concerns.Preparation
The people at the intervention should include those who know the executive well. Those whose opinions he value and whose presence he will trust. Lower level employees that the executive may have mentored can also be helpful. There will be individuals who are concerned and individuals who are angry. This is expected as a result of addiction. All of these different thoughts need to be narrowed into one clear message. The intervention leader can map out this course in various meetings. The final meeting will be a walk through of the actual intervention.

Intervention Day
The group should present a united front tot he executive that needs to confronted. Remember it is a confrontation. It is not a discussion, the group must stick to their original ground. The executive needs to receive addiction treatment. It is also not an attack. The point of the intervention is not to discuss unnecessary issues. Some issues will be discussed, but they should be brought up as part of the end goal of the intervention. The intervention leader will be in the best position to handle this
.
Once the group has delivered the message of the intervention, t he executive should have plenty to say. Make sure to let him know that his job will be there when he is recovered. Let him know that you are not getting rid of him. You are in fact trying to help him so that you can keep him.
