Relapse
Relapse unfortunately does happen to recovering substance abusers. These events occur for a variety of reasons. Relapse should not be looked down upon because sometimes it is part of an even stronger recovery process. To know that rehab has failed and to get back on the horse again to try to kick the habit, means that this person wants to beat this addiction. We are human and we make mistakes, relapse is a part of a recovering substance abuser’s life. Whether it happens or not, no one knows, but it is definitely something that is conscious in the mind of a recovering substance abuser.
Why does relapse occur? Well, there is not a pinpoint solution but there are a variety of factors which can lead one to relapse. For instance, many people throw themselves into rehab because they know they need to go, but they do not research the clinic. You have to admit yourself into a drug or alcohol treatment center that focuses or specializes in your particular substance abuse problem. If you do not, then there is a great likelihood that relapse will occur because proper treatment was not given at the first substance abuse treatment center.
The next point is crucial. Many recovering substance abusers return to where they came from. They continue their relationships with fellow substance abusers, live in the same drug infested neighborhood, and continue to go to bars and clubs where alcohol and drugs are made available. This is simply a person waiting for relapse. The drug and alcohol rehabilitation centers provide therapy and services in order to prevent this from happening. If the substance abuser knows that one of his or her friends is a temptation, then that friendship must end. The same goes for the substance abuser’s neighborhood and hang out spots. If these people and places are avoided the likelihood of relapse will be slim.
