Signs of Codependency with Drug and Alcohol Abuse
Codependency is a form of dysfunctional family relationships that frequently occurs along with drug addiction or alcoholism. This is a big problem for many people to overcome in their lives.
It often requires professional counseling in order to deal with it appropriately and begin the healing process. Family therapy is often available at residential addiction treatment centers when an addict is receiving care there. Counseling works by helping the family to understand the patterns they engage in and see the unhealthy ways that they deal with problems, including those surrounding substance abuse. In a healthy family situation, each member has individual goals and plans for achieving these things, which are supported by everyone else. They have honest and clear communication, and family members usually have a good sense of self-esteem. With codependency, however, everything is focused around the addict’s drug and alcohol abuse. Problems are hidden from other family members and outsiders. There is a lot of dishonesty and denial involved in the relationships.
There are many ways that families can overcome these issues. Although professional help is extremely useful, some things can be done without it. Working through codependency can be a big part of the family supporting the addict in overcoming their substance abuse problems. This will give the individual a support system to fall back on in the recovery process. In order to heal, family members can work toward open and honest communication. An open and honest discussion of feelings should be encouraged, whether they are pleasant or not. Problems need to be dealt with directly as they come up, and people should work to solve these problems together and find mutually beneficial solutions. Doing these things will go a long way toward successfully treating the addiction and the difficulties it has caused for everyone involved.
