1. The mortality rate due to alcoholism and substance abuse in Illinois stands at 5,500 annually. These are the people who die either directly or indirectly due to alcoholism and substance abuse. This figure is quite high, especially when you consider that the total number of deaths in Illinois per year is approximately 110,000; which makes the deaths due to drug and alcohol abuse account for 5% of the total deaths in the state.

4. There is a lot of money that is spent in alcoholism and substance abuse treatment in Illinois. This includes not just the money that the state pumps directly into running these programs, but it also includes the productive loss that is caused in the state due to these habits. It is estimated that the state of Illinois loses as much as $3.5 billion each year due to drug and alcohol abuse treatment.
