The 12 step treatment program was actually devised to combat alcohol addiction and it is used very extensively in the meetings of the Alcoholics Anonymous to treat problem drinkers, alcohol abusers and alcohol addicts. This program has been modified to be applicable to drug addiction too.

The basic principles are the same and they rely on creating an awareness of the problem and emphasizing the need for treatment. The program is used in a major way during drug addiction treatment counseling. The program is divided into 12 sequential steps that when used effectively will help treat the addictive habit and will also inculcate a sober lifestyle in the person that will always want to stay away from the substance. Acceptance of the problem is the first step of the program. This is where the person accepts that there is a problem with him or her. This goes a long way in curing the denial part of the drug addiction. The subsequent step includes applying to a higher power to assist in seeking treatment of the condition. Belief is an important step during this stage.

Then the person needs to surrender to that higher power, explore his or her own spirituality and be honest to himself or herself in every walk of life. Being integrated to oneself means that the person will abhor all kinds of harmful things that are done to the body, including the drug addiction itself.

After overcoming these points, the person has to be willing to obtain treatment every step of the way. There’s also an emphasis on recovering the lost relationships by forgiving and repairing them.

The 12 step program helps in a spiritual and therapeutic way to combat the addiction. The focus is not only on treating the addiction, but in creating a whole new lifestyle.
