The Jail-Based Substance Abuse Treatment in Iowa-An Important Step Towards Solving the Drug Addiction Problem

The state of Iowa is suffering from a large number of drug related offenders that are proving to be a large dent in the effective functioning of the state and its economy. That is the reason the state has implemented the jail-based substance abuse treatment program.

This substance abuse treatment program has proved to be a big help in solving the overall problem of drug addiction in Iowa.This program has a dual mission – one, to mitigate the incidence of drug addiction within the person and two, to avoid the person from indulging in further criminal behavior. The people who are in this program are made to study a course that is titled as New Direction: A Cognitive Behavioral Treatment Curriculum. This program deals with the cognitive behavioral therapy approach to bring the person out of the addiction.

Various parts of the program have chapters on the 12 point program, preventing relapse by identifying and avoiding the risk factors, motivation, family involvement and group therapies.

It is seen that the jail-based substance abuse treatment program has met with its goals of solving the problem of drug addiction in Iowa. According to statistics that were analyzed in a group of people who attended this program, six months after completion of the program, it was found that 77% of the people had reported complete abstinence from the substance. About 93% of the people did not indulge themselves in any criminal acts again and they were not arrested another time. The best part of the statistics was that 51% of the people had reentered an active career and were working fulltime.
