The New Trend of Drug Addiction in Georgia-Prescription Drug Abuse

Prescription drugs have become quite popular as substances of abuse in the last ten years. Ironically, some of the drugs which are used for drug addiction treatment in Georgia and in other American states have addictive effects of their own.

Methadone is a good example of this. Methadone is prescribed by several doctors for the treatment of heroin addiction in Georgia and the rest of America. However, methadone is an opioid itself and it can cause a compulsive habit in the person leading to a potential of drug abuse. Though the lesser of the two evils, methadone addiction is forming a significant part of the prescription drug addiction in Georgia. However, methadone is just the tip of the iceberg. There are several other prescription drugs that have a potential for abuse but are still being freely prescribed in Georgia. Some of these are prescribed for ailments as simple as coughs, colds and aches. OxyContin is a pain reliever, but it has great potential for being an addiction in itself. All cough remedies containing pseudoephedrine have potentials to be abused too. Other examples are drugs such as Lortab, Darvocet, Dilaudid, etc. These are commonly prescribed drugs but people who get hooked onto them will use fake prescriptions and other illegal methods to get their supply of these substances.

While Georgia is already reeling under the impact of its heavy cocaine, heroin and marijuana addictions and the recent entry of methamphetamine addiction, the onslaught of prescription drug addiction seems like an unwelcome guest. Centers for drug rehab in Georgia have now begun employing means and methods to treat people from these prescription drug addictions too.
