Treating the Cause of Alcohol and Drug Addiction
People almost always have a specific reason for why they began drug and alcohol abuse. It may require counseling for them to figure out what that reason was and why they continued until they developed an addiction.
One of the key things that should be done in addiction rehab in order for treatment to be effective is to treat this underlying cause. Without getting to the root of the problem, the issue is very likely to come up again in the future. When it does, it’s probable that the individual will cope with it in the same way that they did in the past, which is by going back to drug and alcohol abuse. This is because they cause has not received any attention—only the symptom of substance abuse has been treated. Therefore, treating the source is just as important as treating the addiction itself in rehab. It can even be considered an essential step in relapse prevention. There are a wide variety of things that can lead one to develop a substance abuse problem. The issue can be a mental illness, an emotional difficulty, stress, physical pain, or even spiritual in nature. Obviously, all of these different things would require different courses of action in order to deal with and resolve them. Getting comprehensive treatment for every problem may not be possible within a rehab center. Using mental illness as an example, some people begin alcohol abuse because they have depression. This is called a dual diagnosis. These people will need to get psychological help for their mental illness, or the alcoholism will likely return the next time they become depressed. For someone who began drug abuse to deal with the stress of daily life, more effective and healthy stress management skills will need to be taught to try to prevent relapse.
